GUEY: LOVES HER FOOD AND GAMES

Guey is a highly active and energetic chimpanzee. Guey arrived with Sweet Pea, the two of them spending time at a temporary rescue centre prior to arriving at LCRP. In the first days, Guey was very uncertain about how to act when treated with love and attention. She did not know how to play or interact, even with Sweet Pea who was with her all day and night. Guey even chose to sleep on her own.
However, while Guey started as shy and fearful, she has transformed into a strong, opinionated, and dominant chimp. She rules the orphan group and never stops moving or wanting attention.
Guey eats an amazing amount of food and has become a healthy - and heavy - “little” girl! She is extremely agile and loves climbing about the large and enriching outdoor enclosure and swinging on ropes, sneakily grabbing at others while she swoops by behind them. Guey absolutely loves any game – with the other chimps, with caregivers or even with a toy or enrichment item she is given. Guey is known also for her very expressive face!

When new chimpanzees arrive they are physically and emotionally traumatized. Our veterinary director does a full health check and treats them as needed. Some little ones arrive with broken limbs and shrapnel, and often have deep cuts due to ropes and chains that were used to restrict them while they were held captive. They are also given around the clock TLC, as nurturing and unconditional love is the most important part of their recovery. Feeding the chimps is a challenge. In the wild, chimpanzees eat over 200 different types of food! At LCRP, while we can’t replicate their diet exactly, we work hard to provide the chimps with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Little ones receive baby cereal multiple times a day and all the chimps get morning and evening cereal to ensure the get daily boosts of all the right vitamins and minerals.
