JOJO: Kind-hearted and silly
Before joining LCRP’s family, JoJo was being kept by a family who, while treating him kindly, realized he wasn’t very happy. When they heard about LCRP in an awareness campaign, they decided to bring him to the founders to give him a chance at a better life. JoJo was named after Jenny’s brother, Joe, and their personalities are actually very similar. Unfortunately, since the family surrendered JoJo after having him for almost two years, the poacher who had killed his family was never found or convicted.
JoJo was quite happy when he arrived at LCRP. The family really loved him, and thankfully never chained him up or abused him like many of the other chimps at LCRP have experienced. The story of his arrival is very funny, like JoJo himself!
Jenny had gone to take a long awaited (bucket) shower after having baby Chancey attached to her 24/7. While she quickly cleaned up so she could get back to Chance, she could hear Jimmy talking in the yard and assumed he was chatting with the caregivers. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. When she got out of the shower, Jimmy was holding not one but TWO chimps, one of whom she didn’t recognize. This was JoJo! After five days of constant caregiving and not able to get away for a shower, Jenny stepped away for only five minutes and within that time two more orphaned chimps arrived at LCRP.
JoJo had a very fast adjustment at LCRP, the fastest of all of the chimps, most likely because he had not been intentionally abused by the family who’d kept him. Most of all, he was extremely excited to see and play with chimpanzees again! JoJo loves playing with Guey, one of the oldest chimps, and his favorite caregiver is Annie S. He sleeps next to Sweet Pea and his favorite part of the day is playtime. He’ll play with anyone and anything, even during snack time. He’s fun loving, silly and kind hearted. JoJo’s favorite food is watermelon.

When new chimpanzees arrive they are physically and emotionally traumatized. Our veterinary director does a full health check and treats them as needed. Some little ones arrive with broken limbs and shrapnel, and often have deep cuts due to ropes and chains that were used to restrict them while they were held captive. They are also given around the clock TLC, as nurturing and unconditional love is the most important part of their recovery. Feeding the chimps is a challenge. In the wild, chimpanzees eat over 200 different types of food! At LCRP, while we can’t replicate their diet exactly, we work hard to provide the chimps with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Little ones receive baby cereal multiple times a day and all the chimps get morning and evening cereal to ensure the get daily boosts of all the right vitamins and minerals.
