JACK: CUDDLY AND PLAYFUL
Jack was brought to LCRP hidden in a backpack, covered in ants and almost hairless. Now in our care, Jack's sad eyes are bright and his weight and hair have completely recovered. The terrible skin infection he had from living in the bag with ant infestation was treated and cured but he still tends to have sensitive skin and possibly always will due to his early childhood neglect!
Jack loves to play and is very demanding of his caregivers, after having such a lack of love and nurturing prior to coming to LCRP. His best friends Gola, Rudy, Lucy and Gloria are understanding of his sometimes aggressive behaviors but he is learning that they won't play when he isn't 'polite' and he has evolved immensely. Jack is an incredible climber and swinger and adores roughhousing with his caregivers. He also loves to be cuddled.
Estimated at approximately 2.5 years, Jack is much smaller than a healthy chimp would be at his age but will catch up slowly with proper care and nutrition. Jack is now part of the older nursery group and sleeps next to his chimpanzee friends with lots of warm blankets and food stored for late night snacks. Jack's gleeful expression and constant activity keep everyone busy and smiling!

When new chimpanzees arrive they are physically and emotionally traumatized. Our veterinary director does a full health check and treats them as needed. Some little ones arrive with broken limbs and shrapnel, and often have deep cuts due to ropes and chains that were used to restrict them while they were held captive. They are also given around the clock TLC, as nurturing and unconditional love is the most important part of their recovery. Feeding the chimps is a challenge. In the wild, chimpanzees eat over 200 different types of food! At LCRP, while we can’t replicate their diet exactly, we work hard to provide the chimps with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Little ones receive baby cereal multiple times a day and all the chimps get morning and evening cereal to ensure the get daily boosts of all the right vitamins and minerals.
