MARA: a strong spirit & resilient girl
Mara is a lovely and very petite little girl who came to LCRP after being taken by authorities from where they found her to be sold as a pet. Her her family had been killed and sold for illegal bushmeat.
Mara arrived with very little hair and weak, tiny, and very sad. However, her spirit has overcome these early challenges and she has blossomed into a – still tiny – strong and feisty person.
She is very well accepted into the youngest nursery group and beloved among the caregivers. Her hair is slowly coming in and her physical strength impressive. Mara loves to climb and play and has a very loud voice for such a little person. She loves giving a big greeting to those she likes and a strong warning to those she doesn’t.
Mara is named after LCRP supporters and sisters Kate and Rooney, two strong women after whom she seems to be taking. Mara loves to play with her ‘brother’ Tom who is much younger but the same size, making him a great match. Tom is very laid back so he tolerates Mara’s strong spirit well and defers to her, following her lead in the trees and with the other chimpanzees. Mara is a lovely little girl and we are honored to have her in the LCRP family.

When new chimpanzees arrive they are physically and emotionally traumatized. Our veterinary director does a full health check and treats them as needed. Some little ones arrive with broken limbs and shrapnel, and often have deep cuts due to ropes and chains that were used to restrict them while they were held captive. They are also given around the clock TLC, as nurturing and unconditional love is the most important part of their recovery. Feeding the chimps is a challenge. In the wild, chimpanzees eat over 200 different types of food! At LCRP, while we can’t replicate their diet exactly, we work hard to provide the chimps with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Little ones receive baby cereal multiple times a day and all the chimps get morning and evening cereal to ensure the get daily boosts of all the right vitamins and minerals.
