PAJOE: ENDEARING AND PLAYFUL
PaJoe arrived at LCRP after being confiscated in a place called ITI. Police found him being sold by a woman known for killing and selling chimp meat and their surviving orphans. PaJoe had a dislocated shoulder and badly broken arm. He was severely depressed, and didn’t really want to accept food, touch, love or interaction for several days.
While he chose to keep his distance he was still given 24/7 care and after some time eventually gave in to the attention. Once he decided to trust and accept, PaJoe wanted no end to it. Luckily LCRP’s founder and caregiving team are always up for the task and were more than happy to provide.
PaJoe’s arm has healed almost perfectly. He has thrived in the loving environment with caregivers, excellent nutrition, enrichment, and most of all other chimpanzees with whom to share his days. He is an avid climber, loves to play, and has a very silly and endearing nature everyone adores. He has a tendency to bite (very hard) when he is excited so with PaJoe – love bites must be taken with a grain of salt. PaJoe is a real character!

When new chimpanzees arrive they are physically and emotionally traumatized. Our veterinary director does a full health check and treats them as needed. Some little ones arrive with broken limbs and shrapnel, and often have deep cuts due to ropes and chains that were used to restrict them while they were held captive. They are also given around the clock TLC, as nurturing and unconditional love is the most important part of their recovery. Feeding the chimps is a challenge. In the wild, chimpanzees eat over 200 different types of food! At LCRP, while we can’t replicate their diet exactly, we work hard to provide the chimps with a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Little ones receive baby cereal multiple times a day and all the chimps get morning and evening cereal to ensure the get daily boosts of all the right vitamins and minerals.
