Winner (pictured here with foster brother Max) was reported to Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection’s Founder Jenny Desmond when she and her husband first arrived in Liberia to care for the former research chimpanzees abandoned by New York Blood Center in 2015.
At the time, Winner was living in a small village called Zorzor in the northern region of the country. Malnourished, very dirty, and poorly treated by the people in the village, Winner’s lucky day came when a wonderful man named Dale, working and living nearby, spotted him and took on his rescue. Dale contacted us right away but we were not in a position yet to take Winner and asked Dale if we could offer guidance and support for him to watch over and help Winner until we could take him into the sanctuary.
Many months later and many pounds heavier, Winner arrived at LCRP after a long car ride, and was immediately thrilled to be here! Winner, estimated at about three years old, became attached to his new family – human and chimp - very quickly. He learned that love and care were abundant and that he would no longer have food taken away, be teased, be left behind or be neglected. He now got to live in a spacious environment with other chimps, multiple surrogate human moms and dads and lots of toys, tire swings, towers to climb and enrichment!
Winner integrated into LCRP’s older nursery group as soon as we knew he was healthy and fit and is thriving there. He is friends with everyone and loves to climb, play, relax and eat his days away. He stays overnight with eight other chimps with a nice cozy blanket and even gets a late night snack to enjoy.
He loves being tickled and playing chase and has bonded particularly well with our oldest orphan Guey, who is five years old. We are so happy to have Winner with us now and will care for him throughout his life!
